Tossing is formed regularly from toss plus -ing. Toss entered English in the Middle English period, probably from a Scandinavian source, and originally conveyed repeated throwing, shaking, or agitated movement. Its core sense became “to throw lightly or casually.” That unstable movement also explains uses involving a ship tossed by waves or a person tossing in bed. The -ing form serves both as a present participle in progressive constructions and as a gerund naming the action.
