気道の確保を目的として、頸部の気管に直接開口部を作る外科手術。呼吸困難や気道閉塞がある患者に行われる医療処置。
A tracheostomy is a medical operation in which a hole is made in the neck into the windpipe to help a person breathe. It may be temporary or permanent, depending on the condition. The word can also refer to the opening created by the procedure.

まず後半の -stomy を手がかりに覚えると定着しやすいです。医療英語では colostomy などと同じく「人工的な開口部を作る処置」を表し、切除の -ectomy、切って開く -otomy とは区別します。前半の tracheo- は trachea（気管）。つまり tracheo + stomy で「気管に開口を作る」。呼吸確保のため首から気道を確保する場面と結びつけると、単なる surgery 一般ではなく“airway を作る処置”として記憶しやすくなります。

tracheostomy は tracheo-「気管」と、ギリシャ語 stoma「口・開口」に由来する -stomy の結合です。trachea はギリシャ語 tracheia「ざらざらしたもの」にさかのぼり、気管の軟骨の凹凸を表しました。だから語全体で「気管に開口を作ること」、つまり気管切開を意味します。関連語は trachea, gastrostomy。
