解説 Definition
大陸全体にわたる、あるいは大陸を横切るという意味の形容詞です。同じ大陸内の広大な距離にわたって延びる路線や構造を指します。
Transcontinental means going across or connecting a whole continent. It is commonly used for travel, trade, railways, flights, or roads that cross a large land area from one side to another.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず continent が「大陸」、continental が「大陸の・大陸規模の」。そこに trans- が付くと transfer, transport と同じく「向こう側へ・横切って」の感覚が加わるので、「大陸を越えてつながる」と覚えるとよいです。transatlantic は海を越えるのに対し、transcontinental は大陸内部を横断する語。transcontinental railroad, transcontinental flight のように、非常に長距離の路線や移動の文脈で出やすい語です。

transcontinental は trans-『越えて』+ continent『大陸』+ -al で、ラテン語 continere『ひと続きに保つ』に由来します。contain や detain も tenere『保つ』に連なり、『切れずにつながる陸を越える』と分かると大陸横断の像が見えます。
Transcontinental is built from trans- "across," continent, and -al. Continent comes through Latin from continere, meaning "to hold together," which is also the source of contain and detain. So the word originally suggests something that goes across one connected body of land, and later came to mean spanning a whole continent.
