タイピスト

解説 Definition

タイピストという意味で、文書をタイプ入力する仕事をする人を指します。日本語の「タイピスト」とほぼ同じですが、現代では職名としてはやや古い響きがあり、事務入力担当を指す文脈で使われます。

A typist is a person whose job is to type letters, documents, or other written material, traditionally using a typewriter. The occupational title is now somewhat old-fashioned because typing has become a routine part of many office jobs.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

type「文字を打つ」に、人を表す-istを付けた語なので、文字をタイプ入力する人と分解して覚える。work as a typist、a skilled typist、the typist prepared the lettersが典型。keyboard user全般ではなく、文書入力を職務とする人を指し、現代の職名としてはやや古風で、歴史的な事務所や入力業務の文脈に多い。

Divide typist into type and -ist. Type refers here to producing written characters with a keyboard or typewriter, while -ist identifies a person associated with an activity or occupation. Picture a skilled office worker preparing letters quickly and accurately on a typewriter. Useful patterns are work as a typist, employ a typist, and a skilled typist. The word does not mean everyone who happens to use a keyboard; it traditionally names someone employed mainly to type documents. Because most office workers now type their own material, the occupational title often sounds historical or somewhat old-fashioned.

typist の語源・成り立ち Etymology

typistはtype「活字・文字」と、人を表す接尾辞-istから成る語です。typeはラテン語typus、さらにギリシャ語typos「打ってできた跡・型」にさかのぼるので、「文字を打つ人」からタイピストの意味になります。関連語はtypical、typographyです。

Typist was formed in English from type and the agent suffix -ist, literally identifying a person who types. Type came through Latin typus from Greek typos, meaning a blow, impression, mark, or model. That history reflects the physical impression made by printing blocks and, later, typewriter keys. As type developed the verbal sense of producing text with such machinery, typist became the occupational name for the person doing that work, especially in nineteenth- and twentieth-century offices.
