Ugliness is the quality of being ugly or unpleasant to look at. It can also describe something morally unpleasant, such as cruelty or hatred, not only physical appearance.

uglinessは ugly + -ness「性質」で、uglyは古ノルド語 uggligr「恐ろしい」にさかのぼる。uglify や古語 ug も同系で、もとは『見た目が悪い』より『怖さを起こす』感覚が先だったと分かる。
Ugliness is formed from ugly and the noun ending -ness. Ugly is thought to come from Old Norse uggligr, meaning "fearful" or "dreadful," so the earliest feeling was closer to causing fear than simply looking bad. Over time, it shifted toward the modern idea of unpleasant appearance. A related old English form is ug.
