un-「否定」+ kind（古英語 gecynd「生まれつきの性質・同族らしさ」）。kind はもともと「同じ血筋らしい、自然に優しい」で、unkind は「人として当然の思いやりに反する」と考えると腑に落ちる。関連語は kindly, kin。
