覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Ulster はアイルランド島北部の歴史的地方名で、固有名詞なので通常は語頭を大文字にします。地図上で「北部の9州からなる歴史地域」として覚え、Northern Ireland と同一視しないことが重要です。Ulster includes all six counties of Northern Ireland and three counties in the Republic of Ireland という地理関係で整理しましょう。
Remember Ulster as a historical province, not as an exact synonym for Northern Ireland. On a map, it covers nine counties in the north of the island of Ireland. Six of those counties form Northern Ireland, while the other three—Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan—belong to the Republic of Ireland. Because it is a place name, it is normally written with a capital U. Connect the word with phrases such as the history of Ulster, the counties of Ulster, and Ulster in the north of Ireland.

ulster の語源・成り立ち Etymology
地名 Ulster に由来する語で、もとはアイルランド北部の州名です。名はアイルランド語 Ulaidh「アルスターの人々」に土地を表す要素が重なったものとされ、その地にちなむ外套名になったので「アルスター」と呼ばれます。
The English place name Ulster ultimately refers to the ancient people and province called Ulaid or Ulaidh in Irish. Its later form includes an element introduced through Norse usage that denoted a place or territory, comparable to the element seen in some Irish provincial names. The name therefore developed as a geographical designation for Ireland’s northern province. Its use for a type of long overcoat arose later from association with the region and is separate from the place-name sense here.
