ultramarine は中世ラテン語 ultramarinus にさかのぼり、ultra「越えて」+ marinus「海の」に分かれます。原義は『海の向こうから来たもの』で、遠方から運ばれた青顔料を指したため、marine や submarine と並べると意味の広がりがよく見えます。
