understand に -s を加えた形として覚えましょう。語末の /d/ は有声音なので、付け加えた -s は /z/ と発音します。

Although its modern parts resemble under and stand, the historical under- element did not simply express a physical position below something; the compound had already developed the sense “comprehend” in Old English.
