解説 Definition
underwhelmed は、何かに大きく期待していたのに、実際はそれほど良くなくて感動できず、がっかりしたり拍子抜けしたりした気持ちを表す形容詞です。対象そのものが「期待外れだ」というより、それを受けた人の失望気味の反応や感情を述べるときに使います。
Feeling less impressed, excited, or satisfied than you expected to feel. It is used when something seemed promising but turned out to be only ordinary or a little disappointing.

underwhelmed は under-「十分でなく」＋ whelm「のみ込む・圧倒する」で、overwhelm を逆向きに作った比較的新しい語です。overwhelm や whelming と同根で、本来なら心を大きくのみ込む力が足りず、「期待ほど感動しない」という皮肉な響きになります。
Underwhelmed is a fairly modern English formation built on the pattern of overwhelm. Whelm originally meant to overturn, cover, or engulf, and overwhelm added over- to give a stronger sense of being overcome. Underwhelmed was later created with under- in a playful, ironic way to suggest that something failed to have the expected impact.
