romper は romp「はしゃぎ回る」に -er が付いた語で、もとは「走り回って遊ぶ人」。romp は ramp の変形とされ、古フランス語 ramper「よじ登る・暴れる」系につながる説があり、ramp と並べると「動き回る服」からロンパースになった感じが見えます。
