巻いてある紙や布、地図、カーペットなどを、くるくるした状態からほどいて平らに広げることを表す語。比喩的に使われることもあるが、基本的には物理的に巻かれたものを開いていく動作を指す。
Unrolling means opening something that has been rolled up, such as paper, cloth, or a mat, so that it becomes flat or extended. It can also be used more generally for anything that gradually opens or spreads out.

unrolling は「元に戻す」接頭辞 un- と roll「巻く」、動作を表す -ing から成ります。roll は古フランス語 rolle、さらにラテン語 rotulus「小さな輪・巻いた物」に由来し、rotate や rotary と同根なので、「巻かれたものをほどいて広げる」がそのまま意味です。
"Unrolling" joins un-, roll, and -ing. Roll came through Old French rolle from Latin rotulus, meaning "a little wheel" or "a rolled thing," which is related to rotate and rotary. The word kept the image of something wound up, and unrolling came to mean opening it out again.
