Obviousness is the quality of being easy to notice, understand, or recognize. It is often used when something seems so clear that it does not need much explanation.

まず obvious を土台にし、-ness が付くと「性質・状態」という名詞になる型で覚える。つまり obviousness は「obviousであること」そのもの。obvious は人の感想として「明らかだ」と言いやすい語で、obviousness はその“明白さ自体”を一段抽象化して述べる語。the obviousness of the mistake のように「ミスの明白さ」を客観的に言う場面で出やすい。oblivious とつづりが少し似るが、意味は全く別なので混同注意。

obviousness は obvious + -ness。obvious はラテン語 obvius「行く手にある」からで、ob-「向かって」+ via「道」が核なので、「道の前にむき出しにあること」から自明性となり、via や deviate と同じ語根が見えます。
Obviousness is formed from obvious and the noun ending -ness. Obvious came from Latin obvius, meaning "in the way" or "lying before one," from ob- "toward" and via "road." From the sense of something standing plainly in front of you, it came to mean something easy to see or recognize; via and deviate are related words.
