覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
vary「変わる・異なる」の y を残して -ing を付け、varying と書きます。サイズや程度がそろわず、幅がある場面を思い浮かべましょう。
Keep the y when adding -ing to vary: varying, not variing. Picture sizes or degrees spread across a range rather than all being equal.

varying の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 variare(変える)から派生し、語根 varius(多様な)に由来する。vary + -ing で「変わりつつある」の意。関連語に variety(多様性)、variable(変数)がある。「さまざまな状態に変わる」という原義が現在の意味に直結している。
Varying is formed from vary plus -ing. Vary came through French from Latin variare, “to change or diversify,” which was based on varius, “diverse or changeable.” The same Latin base appears in variety, various, variation, and variable. In forming varying, the final y remains because English normally keeps y before the suffix -ing. The resulting adjective preserves the idea of moving among, or displaying, different forms, amounts, or degrees.
