vie は古フランス語 envier「競い合う、挑む」から来て、さらにラテン語 invitare「招く」にさかのぼります。もとは相手を勝負に招き入れる感覚で、そこから「争う」になったのが面白いところです。invite や invitation も同根で、競争が一種の「招待」として見えてきます。
