"Waist" entered English in the Middle English period, probably through a French form, and is thought to connect to an old Germanic root about growth or becoming bigger. That root is also linked with English "wax" and "waxen." The idea may have been the growing or expanding part of the body, which later became the name for the middle part around the hips and stomach.
