解説 Definition

weaved は weave(織る)の過去形・過去分詞として使われることがある語です。布やかごなどを糸や素材で作ったことを表しますが、織物の意味では wove や woven の方が一般的な場合もあります。

Weaved is a past-tense or past-participial form of weave, describing the interlacing of threads, strips, or similar materials to make cloth, baskets, or patterns. For this literal craft sense, however, the irregular forms wove and woven are generally more standard.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 weave に -ed を付けた形で、発音は /wiːvd/ です。ただし糸・枝を交差させて布や籠を作る語義では、標準的な過去形 wove、過去分詞 woven の方が一般的です。weaved は「縫うように進んだ」では普通に使われます。入力例のような織物の場面では見かけることもありますが、まず weave–wove–woven を基本として覚えましょう。

Weaved is formed regularly from weave by adding -ed and is pronounced /wiːvd/. However, literal weaving has commonly used the irregular pattern weave–wove–woven: an artisan wove a pattern, and a basket was woven from branches. The regular form weaved is especially established when weave means to move repeatedly from side to side, as in the car weaved through traffic. You may still encounter weaved for making cloth or baskets, as in these examples, but remembering the irregular forms as the usual choice for craftsmanship will help you write more idiomatically.

weaved の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 wefan(織る)に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *webaną に遡る。糸を交差させて布を作る動作が原義。同根語に web(蜘蛛の巣=織られたもの)や weft(横糸)がある。過去形は通常 wove だが、「縫うように進む」の意味では weaved も使われる。

Weave comes from Old English wefan and belongs to an old Germanic family of words connected with interlacing threads; web is historically related. The inherited strong verb developed the past form wove and past participle woven. Weaved arose through regular addition of -ed and is now particularly common for the sense of moving along a winding path. It is also sometimes used for literal interlacing, although wove and woven remain the usual standard forms in that sense.
