wiser の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 wīs(賢い)にゲルマン祖語 *wissaz(知っている)が起源で、印欧語根 *weid-(見る、知る)に遡る。比較級 -er が付いた形。関連語:wisdom(知恵)、wit(機知)。「見て知る」が「賢い」に発展した。

Wiser is formed from wise plus the comparative ending -er. Wise comes from Old English wīs and is related to Germanic words conveying knowledge or understanding. Its deeper Indo-European root is commonly associated with seeing and knowing, an idea also reflected in words connected with knowledge and perception. The suffix -er marks comparison, so wiser literally means more wise, whether compared with another person, another decision, or an earlier state.
