workpiece は work + piece で捉えると覚えやすいです。piece は「一片・部品」、work はここでは「作業する」。つまり「作業される部品」で、完成品ではなく、まさに今削る・切る・磨く対象を指します。worker が人なら、workpiece は人が相手にしている物。機械加工では clamp the workpiece, machine the workpiece の形でよく出るので、「加工中の対象物」という場面ごと覚えると定着します。tool や machine そのものではない点にも注意。
