古英語 wrǣstlung に由来し、動詞 wrǣstan（ねじる・もぎ取る）から派生。「体をねじり合って格闘する」が原義。同根語に wrest（もぎ取る）や wrist（手首＝ねじる部位）があり、身体をひねる動作が共通イメージ。
