yearning は yearn「切望する」に -ing が付いた語で、yearn は古英語 geornan「熱心に求める」に由来する。yearn や yearner と同根で、心が一方向へ強く引かれていく感じを思うと、単なる願望より深い「憧れ」の響きがよくわかる。
