天文学では、観測者の真上にあたる空の位置である「天頂」を指す名詞。比喩的には、成功・権力・文明などが最も高い段階に達した「頂点」「絶頂」の意味でも使われる。文脈に応じて、文字どおりの位置と抽象的な最高潮の両方を表せる語。

zenith は中世ラテン語 cenit を経て入った語で、もとはアラビア語 samt al-ra's 「頭上の道・方向」にさかのぼります。azimuth も同じ samt 系で、「頭の真上を通る方向」が転じて『天頂』、さらに比喩的に「絶頂」を表すのが見えてきます。
Zenith came into English through Medieval Latin cenit, from Arabic samt al-ra's, meaning "the path or direction above the head." A related word is azimuth, which comes from the same Arabic root of direction. The meaning first referred to the point directly overhead in the sky, and later widened to mean the highest point of success or power.
