解説 Definition
ある地位や立場に伴って与えられる、他者には認められない行動や判断の自由を指す。一般に、責任や信頼を前提にして授けられるもので、その人だけが決められる事柄に使われる。立場を正当に維持するには、その範囲と限界を意識する必要がある。
A prerogative is a special right or privilege that belongs to a particular person, group, or position. It is often used for powers that come with authority, status, or official responsibility. The word is common in formal, legal, and political contexts.

pre- が見えるので、「人より先に・自分の判断で決められること」と結びつけると残りやすい語です。単なる privilege より、役職や立場にひもづく『その人に任された決定権・特権』の響きが強め。my prerogative は『それは私の判断に任されている』。managerial prerogative, presidential prerogative のように肩書きと一緒に出やすく、right のような一般的な権利ではなく、責任や裁量を伴う特別枠だと整理すると混同しにくいです。

ラテン語 praerogativa にさかのぼり、もとは「最初に投票を求められる部族の権利」の意でした。prae-「前に」+ rogare「求める」から成り、そこから「他より先に与えられた特別な権利」=「特権」へ広がりました。関連語に interrogate, derogate。
Prerogative comes from Latin praerogativa, which first meant the privilege of the voting group asked to vote before the others. It is built from prae- "before" and rogare "to ask."
