Memory Tip
典型的な形は live in Sydney、go to Sydney、Sydney is a big city です。
Connect Sydney with Australia and with common place-name patterns: live in Sydney, go to Sydney, and Sydney is a big city. Use in when describing a location and to when describing movement toward the city. It also helps to remember a useful distinction: Sydney is Australia's largest and best-known city, but Canberra is the national capital. The related word Sydneysider means a person who lives in or comes from Sydney.

Etymology
The city was named after Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, a British politician who served as Home Secretary when the British colony in New South Wales was established. His title supplied the English place name Sydney. The same spelling is also used as a personal name, but here it refers specifically to the Australian city.
