ラテン語 accredere（信任する）から古フランス語 acrediter を経て英語に入った。接頭辞 ac-（～へ）+ credere（信じる）の構成で、「信用を与える」が原義。同根語に credit（信用）、credible（信頼できる）がある。公式に認定する意味はここから発展した。
Accrediting is the -ing form of accredit. Accredit developed through French from Latin accredere, “to give credence to” or “place trust in,” built from ad-, “to,” and credere, “to believe or trust.” The prefix was assimilated to ac- before the following consonant. From the general idea of assigning trust or authority, accredit acquired its modern institutional sense: officially certifying that an organization or program satisfies specified standards.
