他者の助力や功績に感謝を示すこと、またはその事実を正式に認めて言葉や文書で表すことを表す名詞。書籍の謝辞欄のような用法のほか、公に功績を認知したり、支援への謝意を述べたりする場面で使われる。
Acknowledgment is a statement or act that shows you have noticed, accepted, or received something. It can mean recognition of a fact or person, and it can also mean a short expression of thanks in a book, speech, or formal message.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず土台は acknowledge。動詞で「認める・謝意を示す」で、-ment が付いて名詞化した形だと押さえると覚えやすい。つづりの中に know が見えるので、「相手の助力や事実を、知っていると認めて言葉にすること」という一本線で理解すると残りやすい。論文や本の acknowledgments は「謝辞欄」、official acknowledgment は「正式な認知」。thanks より改まっていて、感謝だけでなく功績や事実を公に認める響きがある。英式では acknowledgement の綴りもある。

acknowledgment は acknowledge + -ment で、acknowledge は中英語 aknow と knowlechen が混ざってでき、古英語 oncnawan / cnawan「知る、認識する」にさかのぼります。もとは「知っていると認めること」なので、そこから「受領確認」「功績の承認」、さらに文書で謝意を示す「謝辞」へ広がった語です。関連語は know, knowledge。
Acknowledgment comes from acknowledge plus the noun ending -ment. Acknowledge grew in Middle English from forms linked to know and knowledge, going back to Old English cnawan, "to know."
