adagio はイタリア語 adagio から入り、ad「〜へ」+ agio「安楽・気楽さ」に分けられます。agio は古プロヴァンス語 aize を経て、英語 ease と同系と考えられるため、原義は「気楽に、楽に」で、だから音楽では「ゆるやかに」になります。関連語は ease, disease。
