adjacency は adjacent に名詞化の -cy が付いた語。adjacent はラテン語 ad-「〜のそばへ」+ jacere「横たわる」にさかのぼり、『そばに横たわること』から『隣接』になった。関連語に adjacent, project。
Adjacency comes from adjacent, with the noun-forming suffix -cy. Adjacent goes back to Latin ad- meaning "to, near" and jacere meaning "to lie," so its original sense was "lying near." From that, the idea developed into the modern sense of nearness or side-by-side position.
