An advowson is the legal right to choose or nominate someone for a church position, especially a priest in the Church of England. It is a rare historical and legal term, not a word used in everyday English.

Advowson came through Medieval French from Latin advocatio. It is based on ad- "to" and vocare "to call," the same root found in advocate and vocation. The original idea was the right to "call" or appoint a cleric to a church, and that legal sense later became fixed in English.
