ラテン語 aggregare（群れに加える）に由来する。接頭辞 ad-（～へ）+ grex/gregis（群れ）の構成で、「一つの群れにまとめる」が原義。同根語に congregation（集会）、gregarious（社交的な）がある。データを集約する現代的用法も「一つにまとめる」という原義の延長。

Aggregate comes from Latin aggregare, “to add to a flock” or “bring together,” built from ad-, “to,” and grex, with the genitive gregis, “flock” or “group.” The prefix changed to ag- before g. The original image of gathering members into one flock developed naturally into the modern sense of combining numbers, data, reports, or other separate units into a larger whole.
