Etymology
English adopted anaconda in the eighteenth century, but its ultimate origin remains uncertain. Proposed sources include Sinhala henakandaya, a name associated with a whip snake, and Tamil anaikkonda, traditionally interpreted as “having killed an elephant.” Neither explanation is universally accepted, so the word is safest remembered as a borrowed animal name whose form was established in English before it became specifically associated with large South American boas.
