An antiphon is a short religious song or chant, especially one sung before or after a psalm in Christian worship. It is often performed with two sides or groups answering each other. The word is mainly used in church music and formal religious contexts.

anti- を「反対」よりも「向かい合って交互に」と捉えると覚えやすいです。phone / microphone / symphony の -phon- は「音・声」。つまり antiphon は「声を返し合うもの」。ただの hymn のように一方向に歌うのでなく、聖歌隊や司祭と会衆が呼びかけと応答で交互に唱える場面を思い浮かべると定着します。anthem と見た目が少し似ても、意味の核は「交互の声」です。
