antisubmarineはanti-「反対・対抗する」に、ラテン語sub-「下」+ mare「海」由来のsubmarineが結びついた語です。つまり“海の下にいるものに対抗する”が原義で、submergeやmarineを思い出すと、対潜水艦の意味がそのまま組み立てられます。
Antisubmarine combines anti- "against" with submarine. Submarine comes from Latin roots meaning "under" and "sea," the same roots seen in submerge and marine.
