apricot はラテン語 praecox／praecoquum「早く熟する」が起点で、俗ラテン語・アラビア語・スペイン語・フランス語を経て英語に入りました。語頭の a- もその伝来の中で加わった形で、precocious と同じ「早い」の発想から、「早熟の果実」がアプリコットになったのです。
Apricot ultimately comes from Latin praecox or praecoquum, meaning "early-ripening." It passed through several languages, including Arabic, Spanish, and French, before entering English. Because the fruit was seen as one that ripens early, the idea of earliness stayed at the center of the word's history. It is distantly related in origin to precocious.
