architrave はイタリア語 archi-「主要な」+ trave「梁」から来た建築語で、trave はラテン語 trabs「梁」にさかのぼります。もとは柱の上の主梁を指しましたが、建築の枠材の語として広がり、ドアや窓の周りを囲む装飾的な台輪・額縁状のモールディングにも使われます。
Architrave came into English from Italian, from archi- "chief" and trave "beam." The prefix archi- is the same idea seen in words like archbishop and archenemy, meaning something principal or leading. The word therefore meant the main beam of a structure, and later became the architectural term for the beam-like part resting on columns.
