帯状装飾とは、建物の壁面や柱の上部などの水平な帯状部分に施される彫刻や模様のことです。古典建築では神話や歴史的な場面が刻まれ、空間の重心を引き締める役割を果たします。屋内外の軒下や廊下の上部などに帯状に添えられて、建築全体の意匠を高めます。

frieze はフランス語 frise を経て入り、さらに中世ラテン語 frisium、遡るとラテン語 Phrygium「フリュギア風の刺繍」に結びつきます。もとは衣服の縁飾りで、刺繍の帯が建築の横長装飾へ広がった語なので「帯状装飾」という意味に自然につながります。関連語は Phrygian です。
Frieze came into English through French frise and goes back to Medieval Latin and ultimately to Latin Phrygium, meaning Phrygian work or embroidery. It first referred to a decorative embroidered border on clothing. From that sense of a horizontal ornamental band, it later became the name for the decorative band on a building.
