argosy はイタリア語 Ragusea「ラグーサ船」から来ており、アドリア海の商港 Ragusa 発の大型商船を指したのが始まりです。Ragusa や Ragusan と同根で、地名がそのまま船名になり、そこから豪華な商船一般へ意味が広がった語です。
