argosy はイタリア語 Ragusea「ラグーサ船」から来ており、アドリア海の商港 Ragusa 発の大型商船を指したのが始まりです。Ragusa や Ragusan と同根で、地名がそのまま船名になり、そこから豪華な商船一般へ意味が広がった語です。
Argosy came into English from Italian Ragusea, meaning a ship from Ragusa, a trading port on the Adriatic. At first it referred to large merchant ships connected with that city. Later the meaning widened to any rich or impressive trading vessel. The word shows how a place name became the name of a type of ship.
