argus の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 Argos に由来し、百の目を持つ番人 Argos Panoptes の名が英語化して argus になりました。関連表現に Argus-eyed があり、「何でも見張る者」という神話の像から鋭い監視者の意味が納得できます。
Argus comes from Latin Argus and Greek Argos, the name used in the story of Argos Panoptes, a giant watchman traditionally described as having many eyes. His eyes allowed him to remain watchful even while some were sleeping. The proper name consequently acquired figurative uses in English for a vigilant observer or guardian. The adjective Argus-eyed was formed from the same mythological name and likewise means exceptionally watchful.
