atlanta の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ神話の女神アトランティス（Atlantis）やティターン神アトラス（Atlas）に由来。大西洋（Atlantic Ocean）も同根。鉄道の要衝として1837年に命名され、元の名は Terminus（終点）だったが、西大西洋鉄道にちなみ Atlanta と改称された。
Atlanta received its present name in the 1840s after earlier being called Terminus and then Marthasville. The new name was associated with the Western and Atlantic Railroad and is generally explained as a shortened or adapted form of Atlantica. Atlantic ultimately belongs to the name family of Atlas from Greek tradition. Thus the city’s name reflects its history as a railroad terminus and transportation center rather than a direct naming after the mythical Atlantis.
