exhibition は古フランス語 exhibicion を経て、ラテン語 exhibere「外に差し出して見せる」に由来します。ex-「外へ」+ habere「持つ」なので、「中にしまわず外へ出して見せる」感覚から展示会の意味になりました。関連語は exhibit、exhibitor。
