「attempt」はラテン語 attemptare にさかのぼり、ad-（〜へ）+ temptare（試す、手で探る）で成り立ちます。temptation や tentative も同根で、もともと「手を伸ばして試す」感覚から、名詞では「試み」になった語です。
Attempt comes from Latin attemptare, made from ad- meaning "toward" and temptare meaning "to try" or "to test." The original image was reaching out to test something by touch or effort.
