attestation はラテン語 attestari（証言する）にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」+ testis「証人」から成ります。testify や testimonial と同根で、「証人が言葉を添える」感覚が、認証・証明の意味になったと見ると腑に落ちます。
Attestation comes from Latin attestari, meaning "to bear witness." It is built from ad- "to" and testis "witness." The original sense was of a witness speaking in support of something, and this developed into the idea of formal proof or certification. Testify and testimonial come from the same root.
