avian はラテン語 avis「鳥」に由来し、-an は「〜に属する」を表す語尾です。つまり「鳥に属するもの」がそのまま鳥類の意になり、aviary や aviation も同じ avis を受け継ぐと分かると、語の輪郭がはっきりします。
