awaiting は a-「…の方へ」+ wait からでき、wait は古フランス語を経てゲルマン系の「見張る・注意して見る」に由来します。watch とも近い発想で、ただ時間を過ごすのでなく「来るものを意識して待つ」感じが残ります。
