A balustrade is a row of small posts with a rail on top, used as a barrier along stairs, balconies, or bridges. It is both a safety feature and a decorative part of a building.

balustrade はイタリア語 balaustrata に由来し、さらに balaustro は「ザクロの花」を指しました。ふくらんだ支柱 baluster がその花形に似ていたためで、baluster や balaustine と同根と知ると、欄干が「花形の柱の連なり」に見えてきます。
Balustrade comes from Italian balaustrata, from balaustro, a word for the pomegranate flower. The name was used because the rounded shape of a baluster was thought to look like that flower. From there, English balustrade came to mean a row of such supports forming a railing.
