bandy は16世紀後半に、球などを「あちこち打ち返す」という意味で現れ、フランス語 bander「（球を）打ち返す」に由来するとされます。そこから、言葉を投げ合うイメージで「やり取りする」の意味になりました。band とは語源的な関連が指摘されます。
