banyan はグジャラート語 vaniyo「商人」にさかのぼり、さらにサンスクリット vanija「商人」に由来します。もとはインド商人の呼び名でしたが、彼らが集まった大木の名へ移り、枝から根を垂らして広がるガジュマルを指すようになりました。関連語は Bania, banian。
"Banyan" comes from Gujarati vaniyo, meaning "merchant," from Sanskrit vanija, also meaning "merchant." Europeans first used the word for Indian traders, who were often seen meeting under these large trees. Because of that association, the name shifted from the people to the tree itself.
