deflate は de-「下へ・除いて」＋ラテン語 flare「吹く」。もとは空気を抜いてしぼませることで、そこから勢い・物価・自信を『ふくらみから戻す』意味になった。inflate や flatulent も同じ語根。
Deflate comes from Latin parts: de- "down or away" and flare "to blow." It first meant letting air or gas out so something stopped being swollen. From that image, it later came to mean reducing force, value, or confidence. Inflate comes from the same root, with the opposite direction.
