taken は「連れていかれる・持っていかれる」、back は「後ろへ」。be taken aback は、予想外の発言や出来事にぶつかって、気持ちが一歩後ろへ引かれ、一瞬たじろぐ場面をそのまま思い浮かべると覚えやすい。surprised より「不意打ちで面食らう」感じが強く、shocked ほど深刻ではない。be taken aback by the question / by the news の形でまとめて覚えると、会話でも読み物でもすぐ反応できる。

be taken aback の語源・成り立ち Etymology
『be taken aback』は航海英語から広まった成句で、abackは帆が風を受けて後ろ向きに押し返される状態を指した。a-＋backに分けられ、backは古英語bæc由来で、backwardやbackupも同根だから、心が後ろへ押し戻される感覚から『驚く』になったと分かる。
This expression came from the language of sailing. Aback described a sail being pushed backward by the wind, with back from Old English bæc. From that image of being suddenly forced backward, be taken aback developed the figurative sense of being surprised or startled.
