間もなく
解説 Definition
「before long」は話し手がある出来事が近いうちに起こると見込んでいることを伝える副詞句だ。しばらく待てば変化や結果が生じることを表し、「間もなく」「そのうち」と同じように使われる。フォーマルな文章から日常会話まで幅広い文脈で使える表現だ。
Before long means soon or after a short time. It is used when something will happen or happened not much later than a certain point. This expression is common in stories and formal writing.

「long＝長い」を知っていれば、before long は直訳で「長い時が来る前に」。そこから「長くは待たない」→「間もなく」と覚える。soon と近いが、before long は「今の流れならこのあと自然にそうなる」という見込みがにじみやすい。ニュースや物語で、change, recover, return, bloom など結果がほどなく現れる場面と相性がよい。I’ll be back before long. のように使う。逆に long before は「ずっと前」なので、語順が変わると意味も反対方向になる点に注意。
